COTA's cheap-fuel buses roll out - fueled by ANGI equipment

The first CNG buses, as they are called, are to hit the streets today. They’re quieter, don’t spew black smoke and cost less to fuel, COTA officials say. But they don’t look much different from diesel buses — other than the rooftop fuel tanks.

COTA is joining dozens of transit agencies turning to green technology that costs more upfront but could save money in the long run. More than a third of transit buses nationwide were hybrids or used an alternative fuel in 2011, up from 10 percent a decade earlier, according to the American Public Transportation Association.
